7 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s Around the Holidays

Alzheimer's warning signs during the holidays

The holidays can be filled with love and joy – especially as many reconnect with family members they haven’t seen in a while. It’s also a time when adult children are more likely to notice differences in their parent’s behavior.

While it’s normal to experience memory loss as a result of aging, this natural phenomenon is considerably different than Alzheimer’s disease. And because a person is diagnosed with the disease every 66 seconds in the United States alone, it’s important to know the difference between the two.

If you’re concerned a loved one is developing Alzheimer’s, take a look at these 7 warning signs.

  1. Forgetting something new that they just learned, or important dates or events. Ex: Their husband’s birthday.
  2. Misplacing objects in unusual places and the inability to retrace their steps. Ex: Putting gloves in the refrigerator.
  3. Difficulty solving problems. Ex: Forgetting how to do laundry.
  4. Lack of good judgement. Ex: Not grooming regularly.
  5. Trouble with words or speaking. Ex: Stopping in the middle of a conversation and having no idea how to continue.
  6. Mood swings and personality changes. Ex: Being upset about driving in the car to somewhere unfamiliar.
  7. Confusion on dates or times. Ex: Not knowing they’re at Thanksgiving dinner or what day it is.

If these signs seem familiar, encourage or accompany your loved one to see a doctor right away, as early detection will allow more time to make legal, financial and care decisions.
