Students stepped into the shoes of “Harry,” a virtual character living with dementia, through the use of Oculus VR headsets on Monday.
The experience simulated how dementia affects the five senses, as participants were guided through Harry’s daily challenges. Senior Star’s community relations director said the technology aims to make a difference for those living with the condition.
“You know when you care for somebody with dementia their world just looks so different compared to somebody that doesn’t have dementia,” Haley Flenker, the community relations director at Senior Star said. “This is really an opportunity that we’ve never had before.”
This is the second year Senior Star has partnered with St. Ambrose for the training.
