A Glimpse into Greek History

From the legendary tales of gods and heroes to the birthplace of democracy, Greece’s history is as rich and diverse as its landscape.

Ancient Greece is considered the cradle of Western civilization, home to renowned philosophers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle.

Τhe concept of democracy developed in Athens around the 6th century BC. The Greek word demokratia (δημοκρατία) means “the power of the people.”

The ruins of iconic landmarks such as the Acropolis of Athens, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, and the ancient city of Delphi offer glimpses into the country’s impressive past. Ancient Olympia is the site of the original Olympic Games.

Dance holds a significant place in Greek culture, serving as a vibrant expression of tradition, community, and celebration. From ancient rituals to modern festivities, dance has been integral to Greek life for millennia.

The most iconic Greek dance is Sirtaki. You may even remember it from the 1964 film Zorba the Greek. Sirtaki is actually a modern Greek dance inspired by traditional folk dances. It is characterized by a combination of slow and fast movements and is often danced in a circle or line formation.
