Ageless Dedication: Senior Star residents reflect on BIX memories

DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) – One of the great parts of the Bix 7 race is seeing all the different ages of runners who take on Brady Street Hill.

An experience like this can last a lifetime time and three Senior Star residents who still have a connection to Bix and a healthy lifestyle shared their story with us.

Fran, Bob, and Myrna are the true representations of age is truly just a number.
From hip replacements to knee problems to heart attacks, their stories are one of perseverance despite the challenges that came their way.

Fran, a 90-year-old resident, has participated in the Bix 7–32 times and the Quick Bix – six times. He also continues to contribute by volunteering for the Bix @6 training runs while swimming and walking the premises as often as possible.

“I am not sure why I started running, but once I got into it, it was everything for me,” Fran Riley said.

Fran was beyond happy to have the opportunity to participate in the Senior Bix this week alongside his daughters, the only thing that would have made it even sweeter: his biggest supporter, his late wife.

“My wife was my biggest spectator,” Riley said. “She came to most of my races”

Bob and his wife, Myrna, residents of assisted living at Elmore Place, have participated in the Bix 7 – 12 times. Despite health challenges, they stay active with the help of innovative tools and health and wellness activities provided by Elmore Place.

“Senior Star has allowed me to have some freedom and to be able to come up here and get away and she has activities where I can get away also,” Robert Rakocy said.

And their message to those wanting to get out and try it…
“Do what you can and listen to your body. If you are hurting, take some time off. Maybe a day or two off and get back at it, Riley said.”

“I would hope other people would look at it. My age, and say you can still do it,” Rakocy said.
Their stories go to show that the marathon is never over and they look forward to watching the Bix from Senior Star this weekend.

Senior Star at Elmore Place is happy to promote wellness, healthy aging, and community engagement. The community empowers residents to lead fulfilling lives through innovative health programs and a nurturing environment.
