We recently added a new tool to The Kenwood’s arsenal of memory care programs. BikeAround, an innovative program developed for people with Alzheimer’s and other cognitive challenges, pairs an adjustable assistive stationary bike with Google Street View to take users on a virtual ride anywhere in the world. We’re one of just six senior living communities in the United States to offer this technology.
BikeAround allows residents to input any street address— like their childhood home or alma mater—and use the pedals and handlebars to “bike around” the destination. Our residents enjoy reminiscing by telling stories of their past as they travel through familiar areas. We encourage them to use the bike in a group, either with family members, staff or other residents, so they can share their memories with loved ones or make new friends. We know that reliving positive memories can make people happier, so we hope BikeAround helps our residents live with more joy and purpose.
The technology gives residents an opportunity to “visit” locations they’ve never seen before, too. For many of our residents, long-distance travel may not be an option. BikeAround helps them to explore the streets of Paris or drive down Route 66 and experience places they’re interested in learning more about.
It also motivates residents to exercise while reminiscing and discovering. As a safe, low-impact form of exercise, it’s a perfect fit for our residents’ needs. There is growing evidence that exercise can mitigate the physical and cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer’s and dementia, lower anxiety and frequency of depression and reduce fall risk.
As one of the first senior living providers in the United States to partner with BikeAround, we’re proud to offer the best tools and innovations for our residents. While BikeAround was specifically designed with memory care in mind, all residents at The Kenwood can use this technology.
