Music and Memory Program Unlocking Holiday Memories

It’s no surprise music can trigger powerful holiday memories. For many, even the tune of Jingle Bells can evoke a time when they were a child sitting around the fireplace with family or skating on an ice rink during the holidays.

That’s why The Kenwood offers a memory care program that emphasizes the powerful effect music has on residents: Music and Memorysm.

Music and Memory during the holidaysAbout Music and Memory

Year round at The Kenwood, we use music to stimulate our memory care residents. Our staff helps residents curate their favorite tunes into a playlist through community iPods. The iPods can be reserved by staff or family members for residents to enjoy.

The program engages and uplifts residents because it sparks memories hidden in their brain. Plus, residents feel more relaxed listening to the music they enjoy. This helps build better relationships with caregivers and family members while improving quality of life.

The Research Behind it

Many researchers agree that music benefits those with Alzheimer’s and dementia. According to the Mayo Clinic, music is linked to areas in the brain that aren’t affected by Alzheimer’s or dementia. That’s why, when listening to music, they can recall memories that would otherwise remain dormant.

Listening to music has also proven to reduce agitation, relieve stress and allow those with Alzheimer’s or dementia to connect with loved ones.

Therefore, as families gather with their loved ones who are in memory care over the holidays, it’s important to remember that music is a great way to bring everyone together.
