Creative Writing Corner – Remembering Sue and Mellon

The Kenwood by Senior Star is known for fostering a community filled with friendships, so it was especially difficult for our writing circle to lose two dearly loved members this summer.

Mellon Kolb shared more than just her writing skills with the group. She would also sing the opening song at the yearly Writer’s Showcase. Her skills as a painter came to the fore when she created a gorgeous painting of a sunset inspired by a poem from her writing pal, Edith Samuels.

Sue Meis was a great writer, and a great friend. She was always honest and direct and said what she meant—and that pleased the circle tremendously.

Joan Sattler, Sue’s friend, wrote her a touching tribute:

Sue Meis: A Tribute

By Joan Sattler

There was a great woman whose name was Sue.

She was loved by all whom loved her through and through.

There was a sparkle and delight in her way with people of all walks of life.

Her gift as a writer was constantly true, whether a story or poem it could be humorous or serious depending on her mood.

Sue was an avid reader who loved all kinds of books. On her deathbed, she relentlessly said, “I want to finish this book.”

Walking was a passion of Sue’s. Spring, summer, fall and winter, she could be seen, walker in tow, walking, walking.

She brightened the dining room. She constantly waved and the many residents she knew waved back.

Sue installed in her family the importance of education. All her children and four grandchildren attended college. Her forty-one-year religious affiliation with her temple indicates the depth of her spiritual life. It also shows the importance of family involvement.

In summation, Sue Meis was the woman to admire for her passion for people first.
