Auction and Program Give Artists with Alzheimer’s Purpose

At the beginning of May, our team attended The Art of Making Memories, a beautiful benefit hosted by the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Cincinnati, inspired by its Memories in the Making ® program. With live entertainment and the opportunity to bid on unique framed artwork created by those battling Alzheimer’s and dementia, we were proud to come together with others in our community to #ENDALZ.

Memories in the Making ® is a signature art program of the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Cincinnati that we’ve been proud to offer at The Kenwood by Senior Star for the past year. The unique program allows those with memory loss to express themselves through the visual arts.

While many know that art is therapeutic, enhances quality of life and can improve our overall well-being, many are unaware of its positive impact on those with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. As those with dementia lose the ability to communicate with words, they often discover the ability to express themselves through art.

Even residents with virtually no background in the arts can regain the ability to communicate while boosting self-esteem and reconnecting with loved ones.

The program provides structure, but encourages participants to create their own expressive messages. As dormant memories are triggered, many residents are granted a sense of purpose and expression. We see many smiles and bright faces – even some singing – as residents come out of their shells to paint, draw and create.

Overall, The Art of Making Memories benefit has raised $225,000 and counting. Thanks for allowing us to be a part of this special night, and program, Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Cincinnati!
