Destination Programming at The Kenwood by Senior Star

At The Kenwood by Senior Star, our team takes pride in delivering an innovative and holistic approach to memory care. From fostering a sense of community to supporting living well, our team believes in offering diverse programing to create a nurturing home for our residents.

One of our unique programs that creates a familiar living environment for residents is Destination Programming®. It offers multiple themed stations – childcare, woodworking, cooking, music and more – to engage residents while promoting cognitive activity.

By engaging in an activity that is familiar, a resident is able to feel a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Though many residents may feel confused during their normal day, these stations help maintain comforting routines.

“The Kenwood by Senior Star staff uses these stations as a tool to help residents ease through a moment that may be stressful, or when a resident may need comfort, reassurance or a way to feel useful,” said programs and events manager Annette DeCamp. “For example, a resident at the World Travel station will flip through the books, and though they can no longer tell us the places they’ve been, you can see through their expressions that they remember something.”

This video is an excellent example that demonstrates the power of these stations. Here, a woman suffering from dementia was given a doll for Christmas. Though the woman previously acted detached and sullen, the baby helped her transform with joy and purpose.

At The Kenwood, many residents have similar reactions. “Our residents look intently into baby dolls’ eyes and see their own children,” said Annette. “Cuddling the baby, bouncing it and talking to it gives them a sense of purpose.”
