Wii Bowling Goes National!

Visit any of our communities and you will be able to witness firsthand the Wii phenomenon that has taken hold with Seniors. In addition to keeping seniors active and socially engaged, the bowling games on the Wii help seniors reconnect with a game that was a big part of their history. From a recent piece featured on NPR.org:
There are 186 teams and more than 1,000 bowlers in the throes of a virtual competition from California to New York as part of the National Senior League's Wii bowling competition. For seniors, part of the appeal of Wii bowling is the nostalgia. It mimics the moves a bowler makes in an actual bowling alley, only players don't have to reserve a lane, don bowling shoes or pick up a heavy ball. They just have to be able to wave their hand.
"You line up the ball, move a little to the left, a little to the right, line up the pins, and let it go. Try and get that hook going," Fils-Aime says, describing the process.
It may be a virtual game played on a large flat-screen TV, but when Sofia Henriquez, 76, lunges forward and releases the invisible bowling ball with the hand-held controller, the emotions are 100 percent real.
