4 Ways Seniors Can Prepare for Flu Season

Ready or not, flu season is upon us. While the respiratory virus can impact individuals of all ages, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that seniors have a greater risk of serious complications from the flu compared to young, healthy adults.

Although there’s no way to eliminate all risk of catching the flu, the CDC recommends four preventative steps to help seniors stay healthy this season:

1. Get a flu shot

The best way prevent the flu is with a flu shot. Experts recommend getting vaccinated by the end of October every year, as vaccines are frequently updated to better match circulating viruses.

To help residents stay healthy this fall, The Kenwood will offer two opportunities for free flu vaccinations during the first week in October:

Wednesday, Oct. 4

  • 9 to 11 a.m. – door-to-door service for Health Services residents
  • 2 to 4 p.m. – drop-in service at the Red Stocking Pub for Independent Living residents

Friday, Oct. 6

  • 9 to 11 a.m. – drop-in service at the Red Stocking Pub for Independent Living residents
  • 2 to 4 p.m. – door-to-door service for Health Services residents

Residents will need to have their insurances cards on hand. Please contact The Kenwood team for more information.

2. Practice good hygiene

Even if hand sanitizer is your go-to companion, it’s crucial to practice other good health habits during flu season. Cover up coughs or sneezes, wash your hands frequently and avoid spending time with others who are sick.

3. Seek medical advice quickly if you develop symptoms

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any common flu symptoms. Experts recommend starting treatment within the first two days of illness to ensure the best recovery.

3. Get pneumococcal vaccines

In addition to the flu vaccine, seniors should stay up to date with pneumococcal vaccinations to protect against pneumonia, meningitis and bloodstream infections. Talk to your doctor to find out which vaccines are recommended for you.
