Advice on Communication Barriers from Executive Director Tom Rotz

The Kenwood Executive Director Tom Rotz on communication barriersWe communicate with others every day, but overcoming any communication barriers can be difficult – especially with a loved one that has dementia. Not only do we have trouble communicating with them, but more importantly, they also have trouble communicating with us.

The Kenwood by Senior Star’s executive director, Tom Rotz, was featured in a column on McKnight’s Senior Living offering advice advice for better communicating with residents who have dementia.

Offer reassurance while showing patience.

Allow residents to express their thoughts and be there for them. Residents will be more comfortable sharing if they’re allowed to under their terms.

Avoid arguing and criticism.

Arguing has a negative impact on residents. Look for ways to find meaning in correlation with what they’ve communicated by asking questions and showing curiosity.

Put yourself in their shoes.

No one likes to feel unsupported. It’s best to strengthen your relationship by embracing the memories they still have.
