Getting (or Staying) Active at The Kenwood by Senior Star

It’s no surprise that physical activity and exercise are good for you. What many don’t realize is that older adults also benefit from practicing fitness, as it offers a considerable positive impact on their health.

On May 31, more than 100,000 older adults will participate in activities across the United States to celebrate National Senior Health and Fitness Day.

With a goal of promoting health and wellness for seniors, this holiday serves as a reminder that no matter your age or fitness level, staying active can lead to better cardiovascular health, blood flow, flexibility, strength, range of motion and more. Not to mention, improving your health will allow you to continue living an independent, inspired lifestyle.

There are many ways to get (or stay) active at The Kenwood, including:

Tai Chi (Fridays at 1:30 p.m.)

Our Tai Chi program at The Kenwood combines simple stretching, breathing and focusing techniques that improve flexibility, circulation and balance. This healing movement from Asia can be completed by those who have limited movement and helps residents improve their hand-eye coordination.

Take a Seat Strength Training (Tuesdays at 9:45 a.m.)

Residents interested in working up a sweat will enjoy our Take a Seat Strength Training program. This challenging class uses weight training exercises to build overall body strength – all from the comfort of your own chair!

Zumba Gold® with Annette (Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m.)

Zumba Gold® is a modified program that recreates original Zumba® moves to be completed at a lower intensity. With easy-to-follow choreography, residents can improve their range of motion, hand-eye coordination, flexibility and balance while having fun moving and grooving.

Aquatics Class (Wednesdays at 10 a.m.)

Exercising in the water is beneficial for seniors who suffer from joint pain or arthritis, as the water’s buoyancy lessens pressure on joints. Additionally, water exercise improves balance and flexibility. Our aquatics class is led by a certified instructor in our large, heated indoor pool.

Go for a walk

If you’re looking for a low-impact exercise that you can complete just about anywhere, walking is a great fit. Its benefits are abundant: walking wards off heart disease, can stop bone mass loss, improves sleep, slows mental decline and more. The loop around our beautiful campus is a great way to stay active!
